Neuropathy Treatment in Danville, VA

What Our Patients Say

What is Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy, commonly called neuropathy, is any condition affecting the proper functioning of the nerves connecting the brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body.

Damage to or destruction of one or several nerve cells causes this condition. These nerves carry sensations to or from the brain and spinal cord and control automatic body functions.

What Causes Neuropathy?

Neuropathy can be hereditary or acquired. Hereditary neuropathy is uncommon. Acquired neuropathy is the more common form and occurs over time due to complications of many medical disorders, including:

  • Trauma
  • Infection and autoimmune disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Medications or poisons
  • Vitamin deficiency

What Are The Typical Symptoms Of Neuropathy?

The symptoms of neuropathy depend on the number and types of nerves involved and vary from mild to severe, including:

  • Tingling, numbness, and burning in hands and feet
  • Sharp, stabbing pain
  • Change in the ability to feel hot or cold
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Difficulty walking or loss of balance

Neuropathy that affects your autonomic nervous system can cause problems with bladder and bowel functions, indigestion, weight loss, dizziness, and heart rate.

How Do You Diagnose/Monitor Diabetic Neuropathy?

We utilize an innovative technology called Sudoscan. The Sudoscan is a patented technology that evaluates sweat gland function, which is controlled by small nerves like some of those involved in pain sensation.

The polarity of the stainless steel sensor plates of the Sudoscan are swapped during a scan to record individual right and left side conductance values. The amount of observed asymmetry can help our physicians in determining a diagnosis.

Why Is It Important To Accurately Monitor My Diabetic Neuropathy?

Small nerve fibers are the very first targets of diabetes. For a substantial number of patients, irreversible tissue damage (peripheral vascular disease, nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy) have already set in at the time of diagnosis. 60-70% of patients with diabetes have neuropathies.

Early identification of these complications, (which may be asymptomatic in up to 50% of diabetic patients), has the potential to reduce or delay their complications with timely preventative treatment.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) mandates that all patients with diabetes be screened annually for peripheral and autonomic neuropathy.

How Is Neuropathy Treated?

The first step is a physical examination with one of our physicians. Next, depending on your symptoms and medical history, lab tests may be ordered to help uncover the causes and devise a personalized neuropathy treatment plan.

You can expect a customized treatment plan that manages your symptoms with a combination of therapies that may include:

  • Therapeutic Exercise
  • Lifestyle Modifications
  • Interventional Pain Therapy
  • Amniotic Allograft (Including Stem Cells)
  • Medications
  • Photo-bio-modulation
  • Nutritional Supplementation

Interventional pain therapy consists of joint injections, nerve blocks, transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, and epidurals for pain management.

CoreMedX is one of the only practices in the Danville Region providing Amniotic Allograft for the treatment of pain associated with neuropathy. This treatment utilizes the natural healing power of stem cells, growth factors, cytokines, and platelets to induce natural healing and reduce pain.
