What is Spinal Decompression Therapy in Danville VA?

Spinal decompression therapy is a relatively new therapy which has a high success rate for pain associated with herniated, bulging and degenerated discs…even after failed surgery. It is a non-surgical, FDA cleared therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and arm pain.

Decompression therapy which was originally pioneered by a Canadian Neurosurgeon, allows doctors to isolate specific discs which are damaged. Those discs are then treated by alternating distraction and relaxation cycles which create negative pressure inside the disc, which acts like a vacuum pulling fluid and bulging areas back into the center of the disc.

How does this negative pressure affect an injured disc?

During spinal decompression therapy, a negative pressure is created within the disc. Because of that negative pressure, disc material that has protruded or herniated can be pulled back within the normal confines of the disc, and permit healing to occur.

What is used to perform Spinal Decompression Therapy?

After a significant amount of research, our office chose the Triton® DTS system manufactured by the Chattanooga Group, one of the premier manufacturers of physical medicine equipment in the world. Our office has 2 Triton DTS systems which won the 2006 Australian Design Award in the "Medical and Scientific" category as a result of their revolutionary design.

How is Spinal Decompression Therapy different from regular traction?

The award-winning Triton® computer is the key. It controls variations in the distraction/relaxation pull, which mimics natural movements thereby eliminating muscle guarding that is typical with conventional traction devices. The preprogrammed patterns for ramping up and down the amount of axial distraction allows for higher levels of spinal decompression and disc rehydration.

Who can benefit from Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Anyone who has back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by spinal decompression therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, degenerated spinal discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and radiculopathy (pinched nerves).

Are there medical studies that document the effectiveness of Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Yes! Quite a few in fact:

-Johns Hopkins University Study: A Study by Dr. Joseph V Pergolizzi documented by MRI, up to a 90% reduction of disc herniations in 10 of 14 cases and a substantial increase in disc height.

-Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University: A study conducted by medical doctors from Stanford and Johns Hopkins found that patients rate non-surgical spinal decompression 8.98 out of 10 in satisfaction and 100% would recommend spinal decompression. Alex Macario, MD Stanford University and Joseph V Pergolizzi, MD Johns Hopkins University

-Anesthesiology News: 71% of patients receiving non-surgical decompression showed an immediate reduction in pain of more than 50% immediately after treatment and 86% showed a 50% or better pain reduction at four years. After 4 years 52% reported a pain level of zero! Reported in Anesthesiology News Volume 29, Number 3, March 2003 Robert Odell, MD, Ph.D.

-American Journal of Pain Management: Dr. Norman Shealy, MD et al, found MRI evidence of up to a 71% reduction of disc herniation after non-surgical spinal decompression treatments. 90% had numbness in the leg disappear. 86% had good to excellent relief of Sciatica and back pain. There was only a 6% recurrence rate at 1 year. Published in the American Journal of Pain Management

-Practical Pain Management: Technology Review: IDD Therapy, April 2005. Vol. 5, Issue 3. C. Norman Shealy, MD, Ph.D. The treatment leads to satisfactory pain relief and improved quality of life in up to 88% of patients- many of whom failed under other “conventional” approaches. IDD therapy appears to be the current optimal recommendation for most lumbar pain syndromes.

-Journal of Neuroimaging: MRI Evidence of Nonsurgical, Mechanical Reduction, Rehydration, and Repair of Herniated Lumbar Disc. April 1998. Vol. 8 No. 2. Edward Eyerman, MD. All but 3 of 20 patients reported significant pain relief and complete relief of weakness and immobility, when present. This study also shows a correlation between the improvement on MRI and the reported improvement in pain.

-Journal of Neurological Research: Vertebral Axial Decompression for Pain Assoc with Herniated or Degenerative Disc or Facet Syndrome: An Outcome Study. April 1998. Vol. 20, No. 3. E. Gose, Ph.D., W. Naguszewski, MD, R. Naguszewski, MD. Pain, activity, and mobility scores greatly improved for 71% of 778 patients studied. The authors consider Vax-D (decompression table) to be a primary modality for low back pain due to lumbar herniations, degenerative disc disease, and facet arthropathy. The authors concluded that post-surgical patients with persistent pain or “Failed Back Syndrome” should try Vax-D prior to surgery.

Are there conditions where Spinal Decompression Therapy are not indicated?

There are a couple:

  • Spinal decompression therapy is not recommended for pregnant women, patients who have severe osteoporosis, severe obesity, active cancer of the spine, or severe nerve damage.
  • Spinal surgery with instrumentation (screws, metal plates or “cages”) is also contraindicated. However, Spinal Decompression Therapy can be performed after bone fusion or non-fusion surgery.

Are the sessions painful, how many will be needed, and what’s the cost?

In almost all cases, the treatments are completely painless. In fact, some patients fall asleep during the spinal decompression session. The specific treatment plan will be determined by the doctor after your examination. Based on current research, the best results have been achieved utilizing 20 sessions over a 6 to 8 week period.

Based on the most common protocol, the total cost of the spinal decompression sessions would only be a small fraction of the cost of spinal surgery without all the pain and risky procedures.

We also offer CareCredit that will allow you to finance the entire cost and make 12 monthly payments with no interest. Or if you need more time, you can set up an extended repayment for up to 60 months. To apply for financing online and get instant approval in advance, just go to CareCredit.com.

Do most patients receive therapy and rehabilitative exercises in addition to Spinal Decompression Therapy?

To reduce inflammation and assist the healing process, supporting structures are treated with passive therapies (ice/heat/muscle stimulation), chiropractic adjustments (as indicated) and/or active rehabilitation in order to strengthen the spinal musculature.
