Relieve Upper Cross Syndrome With These Stretching Exercises In Danville VA

Chiropractic Danville VA Senior Couple Exercising

Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS) is a muscular imbalance that commonly affects individuals who spend long hours sitting or working at a desk. It typically involves the weakening and lengthening of certain muscles, such as the deep neck flexors, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior, while other muscles, such as the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and pectoralis major, become tight and overactive. To address the weak muscles in UCS, specific strengthening exercises can be incorporated into a comprehensive rehabilitation program. Here are some exercises that target the weakened muscles:

Deep Neck Flexor Strengthening: Lie on your back with your head supported by a rolled-up towel. Gently tuck your chin in, and then lift your head slightly off the towel, engaging the deep neck flexor muscles. Hold for a few seconds, and then slowly lower your head back down. Repeat for several repetitions.

Lower Trapezius Activation: Lie face down on a mat with your arms resting alongside your body. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, lifting your arms slightly off the ground while keeping them straight. Hold this position for a few seconds, and then slowly lower your arms back down. Repeat for several repetitions.

Serratus Anterior Strengthening: Assume a push-up position with your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. While maintaining a straight back, lower your body towards the ground by bending your elbows. As you push back up, focus on protracting (rolling your shoulder blades forward) by pushing your body away from the floor. Perform several repetitions.

Remember with all strengthening programs start slowly and stop if you encounter pain or burning. You should shoot for 10 repetitions with all of these exercises when just starting out and may increase the number of repetitions when able to perform them with no delayed onset muscular soreness. Always consult a health care provider when just starting out on a new exercise routine.
